“Why so smug?” the gentle voice asked one day.

“Don’t you see how I’ve grown?”

“You have grown.”

“And it’s all because of the leaning I’ve done!”

“Are you sure?” the gentle voice asked.

The little leaf paused, then said,

“I think so.”

“Hmmm. Why were you leaning again?”

“To get into the sunlight.”

“Oh. So did you grow because you leaned, or because of the sun?”

“Ummm. The sun?”

“And did you make the sun shine, little leaf?”

“No. But if I hadn’t leaned, I never would have gotten into the light.”
